  • Etihad Airways Business Class Beijing To Nagoya Experience

My first time on Etihad was a bit of a disappointment and an extremely bumpy ride. Etihad runs an interesting 5th freedom route between Nagoya, a manufacturing hub including parts for Boeing's 777, and Beijing. For this flight, I would go through some of the worst turbulence I have ever experienced. There were several disappointments with the flight not all Etihad's fault. Our flight was late from Abu Dhabi and I was told that boarding would be 40 mins late at check in. However no updated time was ever shown on the FIDs nor was announcements made at gate. As we went past the 40 min delay, again nothing was mentioned by any of the staff nor the computer system of a new boarding time. The boarding time displayed was still the original scheduled boarding time. Maybe delays happens so often in...

Nagoya airport is one of the three artificial island airports in Japan and it is a lovely little airport that has a big role in aviation. Nagoya is a major aviation manufacturing center and produces the wings and the forward fuselage for the 787. It is from Nagoya Chubu Airport that they are shipped to the US by the Dreamlifter. It is certainly very interesting to learn that Japan and China make a fairly large majority of the parts on every Boeing aircraft from the tiny 737 to the iconic 747 and 777. If anyone can find out why one of the original 787 is still parked at Nagoya Chubu Airport I would love to know. Since my time was not until 10:30PM, I spent a few hours spotting from the SkyDeck. It is amazing to be at an airport that welcomes photography although there were definitely a lot...

Maybe delays happens so often in Beijing that no staff cared anymore? Either way multiple passengers had to ask the gate agent directly for the new time. Passengers were neatly lined up but what was interesting was that no boarding priorities were announced. This meant everyone started boarding at the same time including elderly and people with small children. Onboard I was in an aisle seat since business class was full and all the window seats were taken. The welcome drinks of orange juice and water were quickly handed out as the rest of the passengers streamed in. The main disappointment of the flight was that the only person who seemed to be taken care of the passengers was the man in the white jacket. The other cabin crew in business did not greet or introduce themselves to any of the passengers while we waited for push back. This is in contrast to my return flight where the FAs went to each seat to introduce themselves and take our meal orders. The crew was much less proactive on this flight and I had to make several request for my meals. The return flight crew was simply more meticulous and went through everything during meal orders including asking if passengers prefer still or sparkling water. It is a short flight with a full business class so there is much more pressure to get all the meals and drinks out in time. Even then, the return flight crew operated at true five star level with lots of smiles and offered passengers the chance to sample wines. This crew despite being fresh from staying overnight Beijing did the bare minimum. As we started our descent no warning was made from the cockpit about the severe turbulence we would experience for 2/3 of the way down. You can hear how everything was being knocked around and there were some screams from passengers in economy as we went into a strong downdraft. It was not an easy descent for the pilots, and I wondered how hard they try to avoid accidentally pressing the wrong buttons as we were being tossed around. After landing nothing was mentioned by the crew despite some passengers looking quite upset. Overall, a bumpy disappointing flight with Etihad. The contrast to the service on the return trip could not be greater.

It is amazing to be at an airport that welcomes photography although there were definitely a lot of security cameras and security patrols on the deck. Skip until 3:50 for the start of the flight review. The lounge was a Star Alliance lounge and while it is a very nice cozy lounge with great views, there wasn't anything good to eat. There are lots of eateries pre-security. This Etihad flight was in every way the opposite of my flight coming in. It is interesting because both flights were full in business class, and both crews were fresh, but the differences were huge. The crew went around and introduced themselves. They were full of smiles and absolutely meticulous and professional in the way they interacted with passengers. No one was standing around and doing nothing. The focus was clearly on the passengers. I manage to have a chat with two of the FAs and they were both lovely people. One was Japanese and the other appeared to be Eastern European. They told me about how a short flight like this with a full business class limits the interactions they have with the passengers, which makes service difficult. The Japanese flight attendant appeared really relieved as she changed out of her apron while talking to me. I assured them that they were excellent and a great crew. They were very proactive during the entire flight and after seeing how much I was enjoying sipping on the white wine, they refilled my glass without me asking three times. The only letdown was the catering. I was surprised that the food was rather mediocre coming out of Japan compared to the meal I had from Beijing. Either way I would not recommend the rockfish on this flight since it was bland and not memorable at all. Overall, it was a comfortable and on-time flight with an excellent and dedicated crew.

The downtown area is also popular for the cherry blossoms of the Yamazaki River and Shiratori Gardens as well as for the district of Sakae and Midland Square. Food In Nagoya, when it comes to miso, there is the red miso using Hatcho Miso. Red miso is a regular ingredient when making dishes such as doteni (beef simmered in miso and onion) and miso oden. There is a distinct Nagoya food culture which includes dishes such as tenmusu (shrimp tempura put into rice balls), hitsumabushi with thin slices of grilled eel on rice, and Nagoya Cochin which is one of the country’s top three brands of chicken. Even the Nagoya breakfast of toast and a fried egg just for the price of a cup of coffee is known all over Japan. Transportation From Tokyo Station by the Tokaido Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to Nagoya takes 1 hour and 40 minutes. Transportation within the city can be used conveniently by the Nagoya sightseeing route bus, Me-guru, and the subway. Accommodations There are many hotels for tourism and business.
